About this page

This page describes the state of the License Shadowing Daemon (lsd). Lsd provides a mechanism for modelling the allocation of software licenses by jobs under a batch queuing system, and allows the batch scheduler to interact with this model when it is making scheduling decisions. For more information see man lsd.
Schedulers
This section lists the job schedulers that are currently signed on to lsd. Each scheduler occupies one slot, and when all the slots are filled, lsd considers that it has a quorum and can start informing the schedulers about license availability.
Requests and usage of known software
This table shows the status of all jobs that have requested known software and are either running, suspended or currently under consideration by the scheduler (i.e. may be about to start in a few minutes). Jobs flagged as Live are running or suspended. Jobs flagged as Res. are under consideration (have temporarily 'reserved' shadow licenses). state is either R (running), S (suspended) or Q (queued). Asked for is the software that the job submission has declared it is going to use, and ncpus is the number of CPUs the job has asked for. Seems to be using lists all the software that the job is currently using, as far as lsd can tell by making license server queries.
Requests for unknown software
Jobs sometimes declare their intent to use software that isn't controlled by a licensing mechanism, usually because the software has some runtime constraints and the scheduling system can use this information to run the job properly. This table summarises these cases.
License usage
This describes the license availability as lsd sees it, constructed from information fed to it by the job schedulers and license server queries.
Software
The name of the software, as used in the software declaration in the job submission.
Feature
Some software consists of separately licensed features.
Actual max.
The total number of licenses for each feature, as reported by the license server queries.
Shadow pool
This reflects lsd's model of the license consumption of running jobs, based on what the jobs have declared they are going to use. Max is the number of licenses that are available to jobs under the control of lsd. This will be less that Actual max. if there are interactive users or other external consumers of licenses. Used is a count of shadow licenses that lsd has computed for the jobs under its control, based on the software declarations in the job submission. Note that jobs that are using software licenses, but haven't declared this in the job submission (known as rogue jobs) also deplete the shadow pool max. count.
Being used by
Actual license consumption, as reported by license server queries. The number in bold is the number of licenses used. If lsd can match license use to a job, the job id is also shown in bold. Jobs that are highlighted like this are jobs that have exited but the licenses they were using are still allocated by the license manager. If lsd detects that the job is using licenses but hasn't declared its intent to do so in the job submission, the job id is shown like this.
